too much for better livelihood. On approaching her, she tells the background of her struggle like this:

“I am Mallika. My husband’s name is Chandrasekhar. We were class

mate during our schooling. My parents loved Chandrasekhar very much.
I have borne in a scheduled caste family and Chandra Sekhar in a Kulin
Kayastha family. After schooling, Chandra Sekhar’s father expired
suddenly as a result he left his studies there and joined in a Motor Car
repairing garage as a trainee. Soon after Chandra sekhar married me but
his family members could not accept me as a member of their family due
to me is a Scheduled Caste community. Chandrasekhar tried to convince
    them .

several times that, now-a-days no body bothers about Caste, Creed and Color. One day Mina, my neighbor

came to me and asked me to talk with the Credit Officer of Sahara Uttarayan, -a NGO-MFI for membership.
It was June 9th 2005, I got membership of the SHG named “Yashoda”. My Husband also met with the C.O.
and had a talk for Micro Credit facility of Rs. 6,000 for purchases of at least two sewing machines which will be
operated by both of us for generating additional income. I Took loan on June 15th 2005and started our
business. I have repaid above loan amount in time and have taken further loan of Rs. 8,000 for purchase of
another two nos. of sewing machine and one no. of Embroidery Machine. In the mean-time Chandra Sekhar
lost his job for absence in his duties due to sickness and could not support the family including one baby.
I had to do all the household chores and to manage our micro entrepreneurship. The family often did not
get enough to eat. Presently, Chandrasekhar, I and another five young girls are working in our business.
Chandrasekhar purchases Cloth etc. from Burrahbazar, Kolkata and we take up cutting, sewing and embro-
idery activities. Chandrasekhar also maintains all records, accounts of our business. Now, Chandrasekhar
and I are the main support of our joint family. My mother-in-law takes care of all household chores and some
times family. our baby too.I am able to wear nice saris and go out with my husband without any objection
from the this change came after when the MFI (supported by Friends of WWB, India) started a group in the
village. I am grateful to the MFI viz-Sahara Uttarayan and FWWB, India for their timely and active support to
save us from All disaster. Pranam to them and I pray pray to almighty God for their good health”.
